Technical Elective Registration Procedures
Students register for technical electives during the normal registration period. If a course is full, students must complete an Online Course Registration Form and submit it electronically. Students should check courses regularly to see if space opens up over the summer registration period.
To request approval for registration in a course not listed above, or for registration in more than the required number of electives, or registration in a graduate course, please e-mail your request to the Fourth Year Advisor. Include the course name, code and description (available in the online calendar), provide a summary of all technical electives you plan to take and provide a rationale for your request. A response will be sent to you via return e-mail. If approved, please keep a copy of the approval correspondence until you have graduated.
For courses outside Civil Engineering, the student is responsible for obtaining registration approval from the course instructor. Documentation of such approval should be submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering by the Add/Drop deadline.
Graduate Courses as a Technical Elective
Students who wish to take a graduate course as a technical elective MUST obtain prior approval of the Fourth Year Advisor. Approval may be obtained:
- In accordance with the UBC Requirements of Undergraduate students Attending Graduate Courses
- With the permission of the course instructor
- With a strong rationale
Registration in Electives Beyond the Minimum Required
Students who wish to take more than the required number of technical elective courses MUST obtain the prior approval of the Fourth Year Advisor. Those that register in more than the minimum required number of electives without prior approval will be dropped from all technical electives at the beginning of the Fall term; and they will then be limited to taking electives that still have space.
