Meeting the Minimum Academic Requirements

Minimum GPA Requirement:

We require a 4 year bachelor degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC) in third and fourth year courses.Academic standing with at least 12 credits of third- or fourth-year courses in the A grade range (80% or higher at UBC) in the field of study. If you are an international student you can check your country’s equivalent minimum average here Note: satisfying the minimum GPA does not guarantee a recommendation for admission to our graduate program. 

Minimum English Language Proficiency: 

Applicants from a university outside Canada in which English is not the primary language of instruction (Transcripts must clearly state this, we do not accept seperate letters from your university), must provide results of an English language proficiency examination as part of their application.  Tests must have been taken within the last 24 months at the time of submission of your application.

For applicants whose degrees are from countries other than Australia, Botswana, Canada, Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, South Africa, UK, USA, Zaire, Zimbabwe and the English speaking countries of the West Indies, you are required to submit an official English language test score. The Department will not accept letters from granting institutions stating that the medium of instruction is English. Score reports more than two years old will not be accepted

Prepare your Supporting Documents (Stage1)

Stage 1 is the initial screening and requires all applicants to scan and upload PDF versions of all required documents in the application system before the second deadline. (February 15th)

Transcripts One PDF copy of your unofficial transcripts (Please do not send transcripts in several parts) from all post secondary institutions attended uploaded in the application system (Domestic and international student requirements may differ)

References: A minimum of three references are required. References should be requested from individuals who are prepared to provide a report on your academic ability and qualifications. In the online application system, applicants are asked to provide an email address for each referee. (Please note, that we are unable to accept e-mails from Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail, MSN or other free e-mail accounts for referees.) A unique link will be emailed to each referee, allowing them to log in to a secure site and submit an online reference or upload a reference document as an attachment.

Statement of Intent: A maximum of one page in PDF format detailing your specific area of academic interest (research topic you want to work on). How your past education and other experiences have prepared you to be successful in the Civil Engineering. What you hope to achieve and why Civil Engineering is the best place for you to pursue your interests.

CV: A maximum of three pages in PDF format detailing ALL your past education, experiences, and competencies, including publications (if applicable)

English Proficiency Requirements:  TOEFL- Test takers can request electronic submission of scores to universities. We accept electronic delivery directly from the test centre to UBC only. IETLS- We require one scanned PDF copy of your IELTS score result. (These can be unofficial) 

Prepare your Supporting Documents (Stage2: Only if requested)

Stage 2 is the secondary screening and requires applicants, who have been specifically contacted, to submit hard copies of the supporting documents listed below. The documents must be submitted within two weeks of being contacted

Transcripts: Submit two official copies of your transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended directly to the department of Civil Engineering

All transcripts must arrive at UBC in envelopes which have been sealed and endorsed by the issuing institution. If the official transcript does not indicate the degree name and the degree conferral date, then two official copies of the degree certificate are required. Current and former UBC students: you may not need to submit official UBC transcripts as part of your graduate application package. However, be aware that you are still responsible for submitting transcripts from all other post-secondary institutions that you have attended (e.g., exchange year, transfer year, etc.).

English Proficiency Requirements: Your official copy of your IELTS test result.  UBC requires an official paper record to be sent to us directly from the test centre.

On the IELTS application form you will be asked to specify institutions where you would like the results being sent to. Please make sure to state "The University of British Columbia" under "Name of institution".
