Civil engineering faculty members were 6 of the 160 UBC researchers to receive funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) as part of the 2015 funding competition. A Discovery Accelerator Supplement was awarded to Associate Professor Mahdi Taiebat for his Multidimensional constitutive and numerical modeling in geotechnical seismic analysis and design research project. Individual Discovery Grants went to: Professor Perry Adebar for the Seismic design and evaluation of high-rise concrete shear wall buildings in Canada research project; Professor Thomas Froese for the Civil Information Modeling and Social Assessment for Sustainable Infrastructure Management research project; Professor Barbara Lence for the Accounting for Environmental and Life Safety Risks of Reservoir Releases in Regulated Watersheds: Reservoir and Land Management research project; Professor Marc Parlange for the Land-atmosphere Interaction over complex terrain: Hydrology and Large Eddy Simulation research project, and Associate Professor Mahdi Taiebat for the Multidimensional constitutive and numerical modeling in geotechnical seismic analysis and design research project. A Research Tool and Instrument Grant went to Assistant Professor Thomas Tannert for a robotic milling cell for timber design and manufacturing.
