CIVL Engineering researchers publish earthquake report on Guatemala

Civil Engineering professor and Director of the UBC Earthquake Engineering Research Facility Carlos Ventura and his PhD student Manuel Archila are part of the team who produced a report on the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Guatemala on November 7, 2012.

The report, entitled “The November 7, 2012 M7.4 Guatemala Earthquake and its Implications for Disaster Reduction and Mitigation,” is the first in a series of studies being developed by the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI) on the recovery and resilience of developing countries.

Led by Ventura, the EERI team visited the site of the earthquake to collect information about the earthquake’s effects and to gain insight on the construction practices of the region. In conjunction with AGIES and the World Bank, the field study conducted by EERI is a best practice for improving building codes and standards not only in Canada, but also abroad.
