Dr. Carlos Ventura, Civil Professor and Director of the Earthquake Engineering Research Facility, has been inducted as Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) for his exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada.

A faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering since 1992, Dr. Ventura has authored more than 450 publications, and combines over 30 years of research with knowledge and training as a Professional Civil Engineer to advance the protection of Canadians against the effects of earthquakes. In recent years, his research has focused on the development of performance-based guidelines for seismic retrofit of schools, and on the development of an earthquake early-warning and monitoring system in British Columbia. This important research and installation of the earthquake early-warning system helps the public understand the value of university research and how it is applied to benefit the people in British Columbia. Through his research and public outreach Dr. Ventura has greatly enhanced public knowledge and understanding of earthquakes, and in so doing, has advanced UBC’s reputation as a leader in earthquake engineering in the world. He is an outstanding representative of earthquake engineering research and seismic mitigation in Canada, and his outreach has helped the public understand the seismic safety of our infrastructures and the need for readiness as well as infrastructure funding. He is an exemplar of UBC’s goal to deliver outstanding research to serve the people of British Columbia, Canada and the world. The Department extends sincere congratulations to Dr. Ventura for this outstanding achievement!
