Professor Carlos Ventura, Professor Emeritus Liam Finn, and researchers Dr. Armin Bebamzadeh and Dr. Freddy Piña along with a number of graduate students recieved three awards for their recent work on the Seismic Retrofit Guidelines for the Performance-based Seismic Risk Assessment and Seismic Retrofit Design of BC School Buildings. By the Association of Consulting Engineers of British Columbia, they were awarded the Lieutenant Governer’s Award of Excellence in the Soft Engineering category. By the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Canada, they were awarded the Engineering a Better Canada Award and an Award of Excellence in the Special Projects category at the 2013 Canadian Consulting Engineering Awards.

“The British Columbia Ministry of Education’s billion-dollar-plus seismic mitigation program for school buildings involved APEGBC managing the University of British Columbia and consultants to develop new performance-based Seismic Retrofit Guidelines and a unique state-of-the-art web-based Seismic Performance Analyzer. Using these developed-in-BC guidelines, structural engineers are able to rapidly and consistently determine the seismic risk of existing buildings and optimize retrofits to achieve “life-safety” seismic performance. A nationally and internationally recognized initiative, this ground-breaking work was a unique collaboration between government, academia and the engineering community.”
