The Department uses a portion of its GSI allocation and other Department funds to provide Civil Engineering Excellence (CIV-EX) Awards to PhD students. [GSI refers to the Graduate Support Initiative, which is a UBC program that provides Departments with funding to support graduate students through awards and scholarship top-ups.]
Eligibility. There are either two or three distinct competitions as follows:
- All incoming PhD students – both domestic and international – are considered in March for CIV-EX awards to commence the following September.
- Continuing students who entered, or transferred into, the PhD program over the preceding year (i.e. not incoming students) are invited to apply in May for a 4YF or CIV-EX award to commence the following September. [Students who enter the program in May are first considered in May one year later; students who enter the program in January are first considered in May four months later.] Note that award support external to the Department is utilized as a first priority; and therefore students who hold NSERC fellowships or other external awards of equal or greater value need not apply for this award.
- In some years, depending on funding availability and year-by-year award statistics, continuing students who are completing the 2nd and/or 3rd years of their program – both domestic and international – may be invited to apply in May for a CIV-EX award to commence the following September.
Level and Duration of Support:
A CIV-EX Award provides $18,000 per year, matched by $10,000 per year in the form of a GRA provided by the Research Supervisor, totaling $28,000 per year. The support commences in September and extends for 12 months. The award is not renewable, although in some years students may be re-considered for a subsequent CIV-EX Award, if available.
Selection Process:
Each March, the Graduate Advisor informs the Graduate Awards Advisor of the number of CIV-EX awards available for each of the competitions. The Department's Graduate Awards Committee, chaired by the Graduate Awards Advisor, adjudicates the CIV-EX awards twice a year. Each March, the committee considers the applications of all incoming PhD students and makes recommendations. Each May, the committee considers continuing PhD students for 4YF's and CIV-EX awards, and makes corresponding recommendations. The three most important selection criteria are satisfactory progression, academic excellence and research potential and/or productivity. The Graduate Advisor endorses the recommendations and processes the awards.
