Civil Engineering student Joanne Chow was awarded Second Prize in the Engineering Co-op Programs’s 2013 photo contest. Pictured is a tunnel boring machine, which Joanne encountered during her recent Co-op term in Hong Kong. Joanne shares a description of the machine:

“The tunnel boring machine (TBM) is a rare and complicated machine to work with. Here, a TBM is assembled for the Express Rail Link Project in Hong Kong. There are over 175 pieces to this machine, and every piece is just as crucial and is lowered one by one into the launching shaft. Assembling the entire TBM took a little over two months to complete, with workers working in day and night shifts, seven days a week. The work is very technical requires skilled and qualified technicians and workers with years of experience; I was very fortunate to work with the TBM and I gained very valuable experience working abroad in Hong Kong.”
